COVID -19: Indian Delta Variant

- Advertisment -

There is a reported surge of COVID-19 cases in 43 states in the United States of America. The rise in cases is believed to be connected with the rise in the Indian Delta variant of the Pandemic. The Centre for Disease Control CDC said the new infections have doubled recently in places where a large number of people have not been vaccinated. The Delta variant is also known as B .1 .617. 2 is accountable for 51.7 per cent of new cases of infection.

About 59 per cent of adults in the U.S have been vaccinated fully while 68 per cent have received at least one shot of the vaccine. In the words of one CDC member, “This now a pandemic of the unvaccinated”

Thailand has reported an average daily record of 9,692 coronavirus cases as of yesterday, Thursday 15, 2021. This makes the total number of cases in the country since the start of the crisis to be 381,907. The above daily average figure represents the country’s biggest wave of infections.

A new surge has also been recorded in Covid-19 cases in the Australian state of Victoria. The state authorities have imposed a compulsory five-day lockdown effective from yesterday, Thursday, July 15. The current spike in cases places the state of Victoria next to Sydney as Australia’s two major population hubs where efforts have been intensified to battle the pandemic. It is also noteworthy that the ravaging strain in the two heavily populated areas is the Delta variant.

From midnight yesterday, the state population of 6.6 million is ordered to remain at home by the Government. Only people on essential services, grocery shopping and health workers are allowed to move while the rest wait to get vaccinated.

Melbourne, Australia’s second-largest city has also been put on lockdown for the fifth time since the pandemic began a year and a half ago. Melbourne was the epicentre of Australia’s initial outbreak and was under curfew for nearly four months in 2020. The city suffered most of Australia’s  31,400 cases and 912 deaths recorded so far.

In a show of support, the government of Slovakia has pledged a donation of 10,000 vaccine doses to Taiwan. In a sense, this is seen as a gesture to reciprocate a similar donation of 700,000 face masks received from Taiwan last year. Under the slogan of “Taiwan can help, Taiwan is helping”, the country donated millions of face masks to different countries around the world. The United States, Asia and Europe were beneficiaries of that largesse.

Slovakia is one of several donors to Taiwan since the latter began experiencing a spike in domestic cases in May this year. The government has received nearly six million vaccine doses from different countries including the U.S and Japan. Another European country Lithuania has also made a pledge to donate 20,000 doses to Taiwan.
The Slovak embassy in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan on its Facebook page made remarks on this yesterday. It stated that, “Slovakia has not forgotten its friends. A year ago, Taiwan provided help in our time of need and donated masks. Now Slovakia will also contribute its humble effort by donating 10,000 doses to Taiwan to express support “.

My interest and love for blogging in the area of political and economic developments were cultivated during my days at Government College Ughelli. We had a set of very committed and dedicated teachers from the UK, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. There were two American Peace Corps members along with a handful of Africans. In April 1970 we watched a documentary on John F Kennedy. That documentary inspired me greatly. The following day I visited the College library for more information. I went through a large stack of The Readers Digest. I also stumbled across another international journal, The English Listener. Upon graduation from college and while at the University of Ibadan, l read American Time Newsweek magazines regularly. My bias was for International Relations. This background has proved an invaluable asset to me in my years of teaching and contributing articles to media organizations as a freelance writer and encouraged me to set up a blog:
